Learn How to Draw Mike From Monsters Inc. and Monsters University

I thought it would be fun to draw one of the lead monsters from Monsters, Inc. and Monsters University, Mike Wazowski! Mike is Sully's short, one-eyed best friend who boasts a big personality. I'm sure you'll have a lot of fun drawing him!

Step 1. Draw a large circle that will become the body.

Step 1. Draw a large circle that will become the body.

Step 1. Draw a Large Circle

Begin the drawing with a large circle for Mike's body. As you draw this, keep in mind the space needed for the placement of his eye and mouth.

Step 2. Draw a smaller circle within the larger circle (his eye).

Step 2. Draw a smaller circle within the larger circle (his eye).

Step 2. Draw Mike's Eye

I usually save features for last, but since Mike's eye is such a major part his overall look, we'll draw it now. However, we'll save the pupil and the other more detailed facets of the eye for later.

On the inside of the circle starting near the top, draw the eye. Leave only a very small amount of space between the top of the eye and the body as you see pictured in the example.

Step 3. Begin drawing the arms.

Step 3. Begin drawing the arms.

Step 3. Start the Arms

Begin drawing the arms now, starting with the base of the arms. Draw one long oval on each side of the body. Draw them close to the midpoint of the body. Be careful not to place them too high up on the body or too low on the body. Placing them too high will make it look like Mike has ears. Place them too low, and you will give him an unusual extra pair of legs!

Step 4. Draw the forearms. Leave the ends of the forearms flat as indicated by the arrows in this example.

Step 4. Draw the forearms. Leave the ends of the forearms flat as indicated by the arrows in this example.

Step 4. Draw Mike's Forearms

Now for Mike's forearms—in the base of each arm (there will be a bit of an overlap), draw another long oval for the forearm. Leave the ends of the forearms flat where the wrist meets the hand.

Step 5. Draw in the hands.

Step 5. Draw in the hands.

Step 5. Add the Hands

Okay, now you'll add the hands. You'll draw the left hand (the one balled up) first.

This hand is simple. All you need to do is draw a circle on the flat portion of the left forearm. Since the fist is clenched, the fingers will not be visible. However, you can indicate the knuckles by drawing two small bumps. You can do this now or later on when we tackle adding in the fine details. If you do wish to add them now, Simply reference the finished drawing at the beginning of this guide.

Unlike hand one, hand two isn't balled into a fist. Instead, it's up and open in a friendly wave that clearly displays the fingers. This is the very reason why I chose to divide this step into sub-steps.

Just as with hand one, you're going to draw a shape that connects hand two to the flat tip of the right forearm. However, only draw a half-circle shape since the rest of the hand is open. Now, on top of the half-circle draw four oval/rectangle-like shapes for the fingers. Draw them according to what you see in the example on the right.

Step 6. Add on the legs. Arrows identify where you should draw the legs.

Step 6. Draw the Legs

Now you'll add on the legs. Right underneath Mike's body, draw two long rectangles for the legs. Draw them just about an inch apart. Also, as you draw the legs, keep them thick at the top and have them thin as you reach the bottom where the ankles are.

Step 7. Add in the feet.

Step 7. Add in the feet.

Step 7. Draw the Feet

Now attach the feet to the bottom of the legs. Draw the shapes seen in the example picture.

Step 8. Draw three triangles to make the claws.

Step 8. Draw three triangles to make the claws.

Step 8. Draw the Claws

Part of what makes a monster truly monstrous are their claws. Draw three small (but not too small) triangles inside each foot. Let the points of the claws overlap the bottom line of each foot just a bit. I added an extra line inside each foot to give you a better idea of where the claws go.

Step 9. Draw rounded triangles to make the horns.

Step 9. Draw rounded triangles to make the horns.

Step 9. Draw the Horns

On top of the head, draw the rounded triangles that will be the horns. There should be one horn drawn to the left of the eye and another horn just to the right of the eye.

Step 10. Begin filling in the features.

Step 10. Begin filling in the features.

Step 10. Draw the Features

We'll get into the features now, starting with the eye. Above and below the eye, draw a curved line. These lines indicate the eyelids. The line above the eye should rise to extend just outside the top of the body.

Inside the eye itself, draw the actual upper eyelid. The sides of the eyelid will just about touch the left and right sides of the eye.

Step 11. Fill in the details of the eye.

Step 11. Fill in the details of the eye.

Step 11. Draw Mike's Eye

Draw Mike's pupil. Simply draw another smaller circle inside the eye. You can place the pupil inside of the eye anywhere you wish.

Step 12. Fill in the details of Mike's smile.

Step 12. Fill in the details of Mike's smile.

Step 12. Draw Mike's Smile

Give Mike a nice big smile.

Step 13. Finish drawing Mike's toes.

Step 13. Finish drawing Mike's toes.

Step 13. Draw Mike's Toes

Draw the lines on the feet for the toes.

Step 14. Complete the drawing.

Step 14. Complete the drawing.

Step 14. Clean Up the Lines

Complete your drawing by cleaning up the lines and sketching in any other necessary details.

Great Idea! I loved the movies and always wanted to draw some of their monsters, but Mike's anatomy were pretty hard for me to draw in cool positions.

Now I'm a little bit more comfortable with trying it, thanks^^

Besides, I heard from a few friends that listening to music would help you to focus on your drawing and relax, is that true? And what kind of music should I listen to?

I can just think about something like this:

Is this okay or doesn't it matter at all?
